Different Types of Plywood in The Market

Plywood simply refers to wood panels which are made up of multi-layered veneer and are bonded together using glue. Today, all engineered wood panels are also referred to as plywood. There are very different types of plywood in the market like hardwood plywood, softwood plywood, etc.

SOFTWOOD PLYWOOD

Softwood plywood is generally made up of cedar, pine, fir, spruce, or redwood and it is the most commonly used plywood type for purposes of industries and construction. Softwood type of plywood often varies in the thickness of the material and in the number of piles used in different projects. For example, thinner plywood is usually used in roofing while thicker material is used for subflooring purposes.

HARDWOOD PLYWOOD

Some angiosperm trees are given tremendous value for its strength, surface hardness, and resistance to wear and tear of the material. Hardwood is generally made up of these trees and is thus a stronger type of plywood.

TROPICAL PLYWOOD

Tropical plywood is made up of some mixed varieties of wood from tropical areas and it’s a low-cost variety of plywood. It can be considered superior to softwood plywood as tropical plywood has higher quality, density, evenness of layers, and strength. This type of plywood is widespread across the world for different purposes.

DECORATIVE PLYWOOD

Decorative plywood usually undergoes some facing with some few types of hardwood like oak, birch, ash, rosewood, maple, or mahogany. Decorative type of plywood is very useful and aesthetic for purposes like furniture, cabinetry, and fixtures.

AIRCRAFT PLYWOOD

Aircraft plywood is very strong and it is generally made up of birch or mahogany. Adhesives used in this aviation-grade plywood are more resistant to high temperatures and humidity. So, they can retain their original quality even after facing some harsh conditions.

MARINE PLYWOOD

Marine plywood veneers are also made from tropical hardwoods and they are attached together with the help of water and boil-proof glue. It is used in the construction of docks and boats as they are highly durable and are also resistant to humid and wet conditions. They are costlier than the standard plywood materials owing to the properties.

FLEXIBLE PLYWOOD

Flexible plywood is formed from a very thin central ply and two outer pieces. They are made into a single material with glue for a finished piece but it is designed with specific curved pieces and their most unique property is their ability to bend called flexibility.
