The Many Uses of Plywood

Plywood, a material that is made by gluing together layers of wood is gaining favour in the market due to its useful qualities and numerous applications. Plywood produced by the best laminate brand in India would be a high-quality and high-strength sheet material, wherein quality refers to resistance to cracking, breaking, twisting, shrinking and warping. Because of this, it can be relied upon for various purposes and is a multi-functional utility.

A plywood board is made up of face veneers at the surface and core veneers that make up the inside of the board. Usually, the face veneers are of a higher grade or quality than the core veneers. The core layers basically increase the separation between the outer layers, where the bending stresses are the highest. This makes the panel more resistant to bending. Thicker panels can thus span greater distances under similar loads. While bending, most of the stress occurs in the outermost layers in tension and in compression. This stress decreases from the highest at the face layers to minimal as we go to the core layers. Shear stress, on the other hand, is higher in the centre and the outer fibres.

Plywood is divided into many types, out of which the main uses of softwood and hardwood plywood are discussed below. The typical end uses of softwood plywood include building the floors, roofs and walls in home constructions. Wind bracing panels, vehicle internal body work, packaging and fencing are also common uses of softwood plywood. For concrete shuttering panels and ready-to-paint surfaces for constructions, coating solutions are available that mask the prominent grain structure of spruce plywood. These are end uses where reasonable strength is needed, but the lightness of the spruce may be advantageous.

Hardwood plywood applications include building floors, roofs and walls in transport vehicles, panels in concrete form work systems, container floors, floors that may be subjected to heavy wear, scaffolding materials, wind turbine blades, insulation boxes for liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers and so on. The smooth surface and thickness of birch plywood, along with its durability makes it suitable for many special end uses such as high-end loud speakers, the supporting structure for parquet, die-cutting boards, playground equipment, furniture, musical instruments, sports equipment, signs and fences for outdoor advertisings and so on.

Apart from these, there are various other types of specialised boards that can be found such as tropical plywood, aircraft plywood, decorative plywood, flexible plywood, marine plywood and others that satisfy specific requirements according to the needs of the builder. Search a bit and invest in high quality plywood that is appropriate to whichever project you are undertaking, for the best results.
