Everything you need to know about waterproof plywood

What is waterproof plywood?

Wood eventually gets damaged after prolonged exposure to water. It leads to factors like rotting that affect its longevity. However, this can be avoided by using good quality waterproof plywood. Many plywoods have a better degree of water resistance, compared to other types of plywood like commercial MR grade plywood. This is because a phenolic resin is used while sticking all the plies together. This synthetic plastic resin plays a crucial role in making the plywood waterproof.

Which grade indicates waterproof ply?
Different countries may have different grading systems. In India, two types of waterproof ply are available: 'BWR' plywood and ‘BWP’ plywood. BWR stands for 'Boiling Water Resistant' and BWP stands for ‘Boiling waterproof’. While BWP is marked on ply used for block boards, BWR is marked on normal waterproof ply.
How is waterproof plywood different from Marine plywood?
Waterproof plywood is not the same as Marine plywood. Marine plywood is manufactured keeping in mind that it will stay exposed to water for a prolonged period of time. Every ply is submerged in boiling water for a period of 72 hours to ensure its strength and other properties.
This type of plywood is costlier compared to waterproof ply. They are meant for marine applications such as boats and ships. In the case of an office or home furniture, the best option is to choose good quality waterproof plywood.
Is waterproof plywood a good idea for home furniture?
Without a doubt, marine plywood proves superior when compared to waterproof BWR plywood. However, BWR proves to be better than commercial MR plywood. Hence, one should choose the plywood depending on his or her needs or budget.
It is better to choose waterproof plywood (BWR) for furniture in places that are likely to get exposed to water like kitchen cabinets or bathroom cabinets. For all the furniture that do not get exposed to water like bedroom furniture, partitions, etc., commercial MR grade plywood is a better alternative without a doubt.
One thing that should always be kept in mind is that all plywood used in furniture and decor are laminated. This layer covers the surface and prevents water from damaging it. However, you should always ensure that the product is brought from the best laminate brands in India only.
