Buying the right plywood for furniture

Plywood has many advantages. It provides an aesthetic appeal to the furniture, is robust and eco-friendly and offers value for money. But finding the right kind of plywood for your furniture can be a bit complicated. So here we present some tips that would make it easier for you to select the right plywood for your furniture.

Furniture exposed to water

Some of our indoor furniture is exposed to water like dining tables and kitchen cabinets. Therefore, it is imperative that the plywood used for such furniture should be water-resistant. You should opt for boiling water-resistant plywood which is simply known as BWR grade plywood. These water-resistant plywood are easy to identify because they come marked with BWR or BWP (boiling water proof) grades.

Furniture not exposed to water

Interior grade MR plywood is best for furniture that is not exposed to water. MR, which means moisture-resistant plywood, is suitable for furniture like wall panels, beds, bedroom cabinets, chairs, etc. However, this plywood is not waterproof. One should be careful as it can only be resistant to some amount of moisture. If exposed to too much water, the furniture might get damaged. Nevertheless, the MR grade is robust and good for a variety of furniture. Also, it is quite affordable.

Thickness

The right grade is not the only criteria, you also have to be absolutely sure about the thickness of the plywood sheets. The thickness of the plywood varies according to the style and quality of the furniture that is being manufactured. Though the thicker the plywood the stronger it will be, when purchasing a plywood sheet take the advice of a skilled carpenter.

Make sure it is ISI marked

When buying a plywood sheet, ensure that it has a genuine ISI mark. Be wary of the ones that are not ISI certified as these would usually be of inferior quality. ISI means that the product or material is according to the Indian standards. Genuine plywood sheets come with the specification number IS:303, which is above the ISI mark. In case the number is not there on the plywood, then the ISI mark is not genuine.

If you are aware of the grades of plywood and for which purpose they are suitable, buying the right sheet will to be a problem. Before making a purchase check the ISI mark and thickness and buy the plywood sheet from a reputed plywood supplier in Mumbai or any other part of the country.
