Types of Plywood You Should Know About
A material manufactured from thin layers of wood veneer glued together, plywood may seem like simple wood. But in reality, it has many variations and types. The difference in sizes, ply, and other factors can determine what kind of applications the plywood might have.
The number of layers is called ply, and it determines the resulting thickness of the board. Plywood usually comes in three-, five-, or multi-ply. Plywood can also have additional decorative laminates, such as stone-finished laminate.
Let us look at some of the types of plywood.
1. Softwood plywood-
Contrary to the name, they are pretty strong and are used for exterior frame sheathing, roof sheathing, and other uses.
It is called so because they are made using softwoods, such as:
● Cedar
● Redwood
● Pine
● Douglas fir
● Spruce, etc.
Although it is a strong material, they don’t have weather-resistant qualities and are not recommended for outdoor uses.
2. Hardwood plywood-
It uses hardwood such as:
● Birch
● Maple
● Oak
● Walnut
Glued together at right angles, they have a strong finish. They are known for their great surface hardness and resistance to damage. They are used for items that require strong frames such as furniture, packing cases, sporting equipment, musical instruments, etc.
3. Aircraft plywood-
It is considered the most durable and highest-grade plywood. Using hardwoods, they have heat and moisture-resistant qualities. They're also very light and flexible because they use light veneers. However, this does not compromise their strength. They're generally used for applications that need industrial strength, such as airplanes and boats.
4. Densified plywood-
Made of plywood veneers bonded with Phenol Formaldehyde Resin, the Densified Plywood is an ideal choice for exposed frameworks and concrete shuttering. Making them under controlled temperature and pressure along with sufficient timing gives them strong bonding.
ArchidPly is one of the companies that can give you unmatched quality in densified plywood.
5. Overlaid plywood-
You can consider this if you're looking for a decorative kind of plywood. While they contain the same plies as other plywood, they have a thin veneer of decorative wood on top. Aside from giving an attractive finish, it also gives it more durability, which prevents damage from water and other particles.
6. Structural plywood-
These are not used for looks. They’re used in structures in which the wood will eventually be covered. This type usually requires a strong adhesive that can keep the plies together.
They can be used both indoors and outdoors. However, compared to other types, they are not very weather resistant.
As you may be able to see, you cannot randomly choose any plywood for your requirement. You need to consider all the relevant factors, such as resistance to weather, durability, and strength. A good manufacturer is crucial as well. ArchidPly is a great example. It has a wide variety of products with commendable quality at affordable prices.
